Modern Protein Structure Prediction with AlphaFold

This workshop offers beginners of Structural Bioinformatics and Molecular Modelling an introduction to both AlphaFold and PyMol, allowing them to learn about Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven protein structure prediction and how to visualize AlphaFold predictions using PyMol. It includes hands-on exercises to reinforce the learning experience.

The workshop will be composed of lecture and practical components, covering the following topics:

1. Protein Structure and Molecular Visualization using PyMol

•     Overview of using PyMol for main visualization options and the generation of publication quality images

•     Visualization of Gleevec/Imatinib binding to BCR-ABL kinase

•     Examination of the Gleevec/Imatinib resistance mutation, T315I

2. Protein Structure Prediction using AlphaFold

•     Overview of using AlphaFold to run a protein structure prediction

•     An introduction to the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database and to its analytical metrics

•     The investigation of AlphaFold predictions in PyMol

•     The prediction of a protein interaction network using the STRING Database.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

employ tools and methods of AI-assisted structure prediction enabling them, as life-science researchers, to address a wide variety of questions and analyses pertaining to their research.

The workshop will be delivered by Dr. Ralf Schmid and Dr. Abbas AlAmeer in the computer labs at the Faculty of Science.
